Business excellence and improvement initiatives

The Company has adopted the Tata Business Excellence Model (TBEM) which is based on the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality

Award, USA. It is actively pursuing improvements through Quality Management System (QMS), Environmental Management System (EMS), Aspire Programme, Quality Circle, Suggestion and Total Productive Maintenance (TPM).

During the year, the Company won the ‘Serious Adoption Award’ for entering into the 450-550 band. The Company’s Jamshedpur operation was certified for ISO 14001:2004 Environment Management System by IRQS. The business units of Water Management, Power Services Division, Planning Engineering and Construction, Integrated Customer Services and Public Health & Horticulture Services have been certified for ISO 9001:2000.

The Company’s committed efforts towards improving efficiency and service levels in its operations at Jamshedpur have resulted in following improvements:

  • Water quality w.r.t. Free Chlorine and E-Coliform has been consistently better than the BIS norms. 97% of the samples had Free Chlorine > 0.2 ppm as against the norm of >95%, while 99% of the samples had E-Coliform MPN=0 against the norm of >95%.
      

  • Treated Sewage quality has been consistently much better than the Pollution Control Board norms. Total Suspended Solids (TSS) and Bio-Chemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) levels achieved were 12 ppm and 10.5 ppm as against the norm of <30ppm and <20ppm respectively.
      

  • Un-Accounted For Water (UFW) for Raw Water, Clarified Water, Potable Water at Treatment Plant and Potable Water in Rising Main was at lowest-ever at 2.3%, 4.0%, 5.3% and 5.0% respectively.
        

  • The quality of power distribution was amongst the best with availability reaching a high of 99.8%.
       

  • Compliance to Municipal Solid Waste collection schedule improved from 91.6% in FY06 to 96% in FY07.
       

  • Quality of ambient air and underground water at municipal solid waste dumping sites were consistently better than norms. The suspended Particle Matter (SPM) count of ambient air was 340 mg/m3 against norm of below 500 mg/m3 and there were no traces of Arsenic and Cadmium in the underground water.
